What is HDPE?

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene. It is sometimes called "alkathene" or "polythene" when used for HDPE pipes.[1] With a high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE is used in the production of plastic bottles, corrosion-resistant piping, geomembranes and plastic lumber. HDPE is commonly recycled, and has the number "2" as its resin identification code. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a white powder or granular product. Non-toxic, tasteless, crystallinity of 80% to 90%, softening point of 125 to 135°C, service temperature up to 100°C; hardness, tensile strength and creep are better than low density polyethylene; wear resistance, Good electrical insulation, toughness and cold resistance.

What is UHMWPE?

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a type of thermoplastic polyethylene known for its extremely long chains, with a molecular mass usually between 3.5 and 7.5 million atomic mass units (amu). This structure gives UHMWPE its unique properties, including:

  • High Impact Strength: It has the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic currently available.
  • Abrasion Resistance: UHMWPE is highly resistant to wear and abrasion, making it ideal for applications where durability is crucial.
  • Low Friction: It has a very low coefficient of friction, comparable to that of Teflon (PTFE), but with better abrasion resistance.
  • Chemical Resistance: It is resistant to many corrosive chemicals, except for oxidizing acids.
  • Biocompatibility: UHMWPE is odourless, tasteless, and non-toxic, making it suitable for medical applications such as joint replacements.

This material is used in a variety of industries, including medical devices, ballistic protection, and industrial applications where high durability and low friction are required
